To convert an hourly wage to an annual salary, multiply it by the number of paid hours in your year. A standard US full-time year is 40 hours × 52 weeks = 2,080 hours, so $25 an hour is $52,000 a year before tax. To go the other way, divide the salary by 2,080: $60,000 a year is $28.85 an hour. Change the hours if your week is shorter (37.5 is common in the UK, 38 in Australia) or if some weeks are unpaid.

The formulas, with a worked example

Hourly to annual: annual salary = hourly rate × hours per week × paid weeks per year

Annual to hourly: hourly rate = annual salary ÷ (hours per week × paid weeks per year)

Worked example for $28 an hour on a 40-hour week:

  1. Weekly pay: $28 × 40 = $1,120
  2. Annual pay: $1,120 × 52 = $58,240
  3. Monthly pay: $58,240 ÷ 12 = $4,853.33
  4. Bi-weekly paycheck: $58,240 ÷ 26 = $2,240

And in reverse, a $65,000 salary on 40 hours a week is $65,000 ÷ 2,080 = $31.25 an hour.

Mental shortcut: double the hourly rate and add three zeros. $25 an hour ≈ $50,000 a year. This uses 2,000 hours instead of 2,080, so it comes out about 4% low, which is close enough for scanning job ads (and roughly right if you take two unpaid weeks off). In reverse, halve the salary and drop the thousands: $70,000 ≈ $35 an hour (the exact figure is $33.65).

Monthly pay is not weekly pay × 4. A month averages 52 ÷ 12 = 4.33 weeks, so $1,000 a week is $4,333 a month, not $4,000. Getting this wrong understates a monthly budget by about $333 for every $1,000 of weekly pay.

The Hourly to Salary Calculator does all of these steps at once and shows annual, monthly, semi-monthly, bi-weekly, weekly and daily pay. The Salary to Hourly Calculator runs the reverse. Both have a currency switch for dollars, pounds, Canadian and Australian dollars.

Adjusting for overtime, part-time hours and time off

The basic formula assumes the same hours every week and pay for all 52 weeks. Adjust it when that isn’t true.

Regular overtime

If you reliably work overtime at time and a half, add it to the weekly figure. At $22 an hour with 40 regular hours and 5 overtime hours every week:

  • Regular pay: $22 × 40 = $880
  • Overtime pay: $22 × 1.5 × 5 = $165
  • Weekly total: $1,045, and $1,045 × 52 = $54,340 a year, compared with $45,760 without overtime

Only count overtime you can rely on. For a single week with double time or a different multiplier, use the Overtime Pay Calculator.

Part-time hours

Use your actual weekly hours. $18 an hour × 25 hours × 52 weeks = $23,400 a year.

Unpaid weeks

Hourly workers are usually not paid for weeks they don’t work. If you take two unpaid weeks, use 50 weeks: $25 × 40 × 50 = $50,000 instead of $52,000. Salaried employees with paid holidays should keep 52 weeks, because their pay doesn’t stop.

Paid holidays and vacation raise what you earn per hour you actually work. Take a $65,000 salary with 10 public holidays and 15 vacation days (25 days):

  • Paid hours: 40 × 52 = 2,080, so $65,000 ÷ 2,080 = $31.25 an hour
  • Hours worked: 2,080 − (25 × 8) = 1,880, so $65,000 ÷ 1,880 = $34.57 per hour worked

Use $31.25 to compare with an hourly job that also pays for holidays, and $34.57 to compare with contract or gig work that pays nothing for time off. The salary calculator’s “Paid days off” field shows both, and the PTO Accrual Calculator tracks how fast that leave builds up each pay period.

The same logic works against you when you work long weeks on a fixed salary. $80,000 looks like $38.46 an hour on 40 hours, but someone regularly working 50 hours earns $80,000 ÷ 2,600 = $30.77.

Why 2,080 isn’t the only right number

  • A year is slightly more than 52 weeks. 365 ÷ 7 = 52.14, so a year has 260 or 261 weekdays (262 in some leap years). That’s why weekly or bi-weekly payrolls occasionally have 53 or 27 paydays in a calendar year.
  • The US federal government uses 2,087 hours, the average work year over a 28-year calendar cycle, to turn General Schedule salaries into hourly rates. On that basis $60,000 is $28.75 an hour rather than $28.85.
  • Commuting is unpaid time. A 70-minute round trip five days a week for 48 weeks adds 280 hours a year, the same as seven extra 40-hour weeks. The Job Offer Comparison Calculator includes commute hours and costs, bonus, equity, retirement match and PTO to give each offer an effective hourly rate.

Standard hours and overtime rules by country

Rules change, so check the official source before relying on a threshold.

CountryTypical full-time weekHours per yearOvertime basics
US40 hours2,080Non-exempt employees get at least 1.5× for hours over 40 in a workweek; California also has daily overtime after 8 hours
UK37.5 hours (35–40 common)1,950No legal right to an overtime premium; your contract decides, but average pay must not fall below the minimum wage
Canada40 hours2,0801.5× after a provincial threshold: 44 hours a week in Ontario, 40 hours a week (or 8 a day) in BC and for federally regulated employers
Australia38 hours1,976Ordinary hours are capped at 38 a week plus reasonable extra hours; overtime and penalty rates come from awards or agreements

United States. Salaried employees classed as exempt aren’t owed overtime. Since a federal court struck down the 2024 increase, the federal salary threshold for most exempt roles has been $684 a week ($35,568 a year). Some states, including California and New York, set higher thresholds. The federal minimum wage of $7.25 works out to $15,080 a year full time. See the Department of Labor.

United Kingdom. Salaries are normally quoted per year. Full-time workers get 5.6 weeks of paid statutory holiday, so keep 52 weeks in the formula. From 1 April 2026 the National Living Wage is £12.71 an hour for workers aged 21 and over, which is £24,784.50 a year on a 37.5-hour week. To get from gross to net, the UK Take-home Pay Calculator applies 2026/27 income tax, National Insurance, pension and student loan deductions. For example, £45,000 in England with a 5% workplace pension (net pay arrangement) leaves about £34,120 a year, or £2,843 a month. Official guidance is at GOV.UK.

Canada. Most provinces require at least two weeks of paid vacation after a year of service, often paid to hourly workers as 4% of earnings. A full-time hourly worker who gets that vacation pay can still use 52 weeks. Employment standards are provincial, except for federally regulated industries such as banking and air transport. See Canada.ca.

Australia. Job ads may quote “base plus super” or a “package” that already includes super. The Superannuation Guarantee has been 12% since 1 July 2025, so a $90,000 package including super is a $80,357 base ($90,000 ÷ 1.12), or $40.67 an hour on 1,976 hours. Casual employees usually get a 25% casual loading instead of paid leave, so divide a casual rate by 1.25 to compare it with a permanent job: $35 casual is roughly $28 permanent. Full-time employees get four weeks of paid annual leave under the National Employment Standards.

FAQ

How much is $20 an hour a year?

$41,600 before tax at 40 hours a week for 52 weeks. That’s $3,466.67 a month or $1,600 every two weeks. At 30 hours a week it’s $31,200.

How much is $50,000 a year per hour?

$24.04 an hour on a 40-hour week, $25.30 on 38 hours and $25.64 on 37.5 hours.

How many working hours are in a year?

2,080 for a 40-hour week, 1,976 for 38 hours and 1,950 for 37.5 hours, all counting 52 paid weeks. Subtract holidays and vacation to get the hours you actually work. For example, 25 days off leaves 1,880 hours.

Should I divide my salary by 2,080 or 2,000?

Use 2,080 for an accurate full-time rate. Dividing by 2,000 is a quick estimate that comes out about 4% high.

Do these calculations show take-home pay?

No. They give gross pay. Income tax, social security, retirement contributions and benefits come out afterwards. UK workers can use the take-home pay calculator. In the US, Canada and Australia, deductions depend on your state or province and your situation, so check the IRS, Canada.ca or the ATO.

Is monthly pay just weekly pay times four?

No. Multiply weekly pay by 52 and divide by 12, which is the same as multiplying by about 4.33. Using 4 understates your monthly income by roughly 8%.
