What is the GPA Calculator?

A GPA calculator averages your grades weighted by credit hours, using GPA = Σ(grade points × credits) ÷ total credits on the US 4.0 scale (A = 4.0, A− = 3.7, B+ = 3.3, B = 3.0 and so on). An A in a 4-credit class therefore counts for more than an A in a 3-credit class.

AnyShift shows your unweighted semester GPA and a weighted GPA that adds 0.5 for Honors and 1.0 for AP/IB courses. It also gives your new cumulative GPA when you enter your previous GPA and credits.

How to use the GPA Calculator

  1. For each class, enter the course name, its Grade (A/A+ to F) and Credits. Click Add course for more.
  2. Set Level to Honors (+0.5) or AP / IB (+1.0) for weighted classes.
  3. For a cumulative GPA, enter your Previous cumulative GPA and Previous credits earned.
  4. Read your semester GPA, weighted GPA, total credits and cumulative GPA, which update as you edit.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate my GPA?
Multiply each grade’s points by the class credits, add them up and divide by the total credits. An A (4.0) in a 3-credit class plus a B (3.0) in a 4-credit class gives (12 + 12) ÷ 7 = 3.43.
What is the difference between weighted and unweighted GPA?
Unweighted GPA uses the plain 4.0 scale. Weighted GPA adds a bonus for harder classes, here +0.5 for Honors and +1.0 for AP or IB, so it can go above 4.0. Many colleges recalculate GPA their own way.
How do I calculate cumulative GPA?
Combine grade points and credits across all terms: (previous GPA × previous credits + this term’s points) ÷ all credits. A 3.2 over 30 credits plus a 3.8 over 15 credits gives 3.40.
What is a good GPA?
A 2.0 is typically the minimum for good academic standing. A 3.0 (B average) is a common cut-off for scholarships and graduate programs, and 3.5 or higher is considered strong.
Does this work for UK, Canadian or Australian grades?
It uses the US 4.0 letter-grade scale. Canadian schools on 4.0 or 4.3 scales can be approximated, but UK degree classifications and Australia’s 7-point GPA need their own conversion.
