What is the Fraction Calculator?
A fraction calculator does arithmetic with fractions and gives the answer in lowest terms. To add or subtract, use a common denominator: a/b + c/d = (ad + bc) ÷ bd; to multiply, multiply tops and bottoms (a/b × c/d = ac/bd); to divide, multiply by the reciprocal (a/b ÷ c/d = ad/bc). The result is then simplified by dividing by the greatest common divisor.
Enter proper fractions (3/4), improper fractions (9/4), mixed numbers (1 1/2), negatives (-2/3) or decimals (0.25). For example, 1 1/2 + 3/4 = 9/4, shown as the mixed number 2 1/4, the decimal 2.25 and 225%.
How to use the Fraction Calculator
- Type the First fraction — e.g. 3/4, 1 1/2 (a space between the whole number and the fraction) or 0.25.
- Choose the Operation: Add (+), Subtract (−), Multiply (×) or Divide (÷).
- Type the Second fraction.
- Read the simplified answer, mixed number, decimal and percent, which update as you type; use Copy results or Share result to save it.
